Before this last weekend we were 2-4. After this weekend we are 4-4. We upset the #1 ranked team in our district in their house by 13 points. They finally all played together the way I knew they could play together. If we can keep up this intensity and focus we are going to be just fine. My goal is to end up 2nd in District so we don't have to play F-Town til the championship game. We are ranked 3rd as of right now. Ok, so that is where we stand. I'm proud of the way they are coming together. And my Duke boys are ranked #2! Ahead of UNC I might add...

Basketball Started!

Ok, so my basketball season started last Monday. We are going to be pretty short. My tallest girl is 5'9". I'm in the process of getting them in shape. We ran a lot this week, now we can start getting to the real basketball. Our first game is two weeks from today. We have new plays to learn and a couple different new defenses to put into play. I'm planning on pressing and fast breaking the whole game, that is the only way we are going to be able to beat most the teams in our district. Ok then, I will keep the two people that check in at my blog updated with the outcome of my season. Yay! About two years ago she found out she was being sent to Korea for a year and then she would be stationed in Hawaii. She had two cats and was looking for someone to watch them while she was in Korea and then ship them to her in Hawaii. Being the nice person I am, I told her I would watch them if she couldn't find anyone else. Of course I ended up with them. And then about a month ago it all fell apart. It ended up costing way more to get 'em to Hawaii then she had been told and had planned for. So now I got the pleasure of finding 'em a home. In the town where I live, there are lots of ads in the paper for free cats so I decided I would take them to a shelter. I really didn't want to, so I looked up one of the shelters that I had seen. It was a "no kill" shelter and there are more and bigger towns around this shelter so I decided to make the hour and half drive to drop them off. They pooped twice in their crate, I looked back and the older one was drooling uncontrollably. It was heart wrenching. I was good til I walked back out to the car to leave. As I drove away, I broke down a little. Now I am not an emotional person at all, I hate crying. But there I was driving away from the cats I really didn't like and wasn't horribly attached to. After a year and a half, I guess I got to like them a little. Still not a big cat person, and I'm not gonna miss their hair. I just hope they find a home where someone will love them and treat them right. I called my mom, she assured me they would find a good home. Dropping them off was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I'm a little mad at my friend (their owner) for putting me in that position. It sucked to say the least. And then to top it off, Duke lost their game today. My bracket is so screwed. Argh...

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

So Duke just pulled out a very narrow victory of one point over Belmont. For those of you who don't pay attention to college ball, Duke was a 2 seed and Belmont a 15 seed. The last time a 15 seed beat a 2 seed was 1991, I think that is what they said... If I am wrong, feel free to correct me in a comment. Anyway, it was very nerve wracking. I think I got a few gray hairs. But they pulled it out, so its all good. It was quite amazing. I don't think anyone, not even themselves, was expecting to do that good. I didn't think they could even get out of Divisionals, but they surprised me and everyone else.

Because of their Championship game I didn't get to leave for my 'rents place til Sunday. I had to stop in Utah for the night and drive the rest of the way Monday. I was a little nervous to be heading there seeing as how I had written a letter about 3 weeks before to come out to them. I had gotten an email in response to the letter saying they were shocked and they weren't ready to deal with it long distance so when I got there we would have a chat about it. I was not looking forward to this "chat." Anyway, I got there pretty early Monday morning, just in time to go grocery shopping with my mom. We stopped at Starbucks and my mom leaned over and grabbed my knee and said, "Me and dad have been praying about this whole thing and God said, 'you love her and that's enough.' So we're gonna leave it at that. We will always love you, no matter what. And that means no "talk."

Needless to say, I was stunned. And relieved. The rest of the trip was great. My mom would ask questions once in awhile but nothing too big a deal. I know they aren't necessarily cool with it but they are trusting me to live my own life. So all in all it turned out good. It has been a good couple weeks. Anyway, track season is upon us, that means no more getting home after 9pm because of practice. Yay!

So Frickin' Busy

So I have been working like crazy lately. Its basketball tourney season for high schools and I have been working lots of tournaments. My guys lost out in divisionals which was very disappointing but there was a lot of pressure on them too, I think it got in their heads. My girls ended up winning divisionals and are going on to State. Crazy! They came out of nowhere to win the Divisional Tourney. Lots of upsets, some very fun games to watch. I think one of my girls tore her ACL. She has a Dr. appt. next Tuesday so we will know for sure. Argh. ACL rehab sucks, but she's a tough kid, she'll pull through. Very frustrating story to go along with that whole story, but I don't wanna get into that now. Last weekend of Tournaments is coming up. I am then heading to see my 'rents. Leaving Saturday. Driving so the pup can come and see his grandma. It will be a nice break from this place I call home. This is one broken up post going in many directions.... Ok then, that is all.

Yay for the Blue Devils!

Ok, so the Duke/UNC game was last night and Duke won by 11 points! I apologize to the two people that read my blog that I have been absent. I have had some interesting stuff happen in this past month, here are some updates:

-I am a year older
-My friend from college came out to go snowboarding, and that was an absolute blast
-My boys basketball team upset the #2 ranked team in the state by over 20 points
-My Duke boys are ranked #2, above UNC, yeah buddy!
-The Duke/UNC game is tomorrow night and I am very excited
-I had to give a presentation at work and none of my video clips worked and I had to demonstrate everything
-I am learning how to do sutures (we practice on pigs' feet). I'm pretty darn good.
-I found a beer I like
-I learned that last year a couple of my high school boys peed on one of the senior girl's car
-My high school girls apparently can't even get through pre-game announcements without hurting each other (two of them ran into each other while shaking hands with the refs and one of them got a humongous black eye)
-Watching wrestling for 11.5 hours on a saturday is not my idea of a good time

Well those are the updates for now, I will hopefully be better about blogging this month. Hope all is well with all y'all. I was hired to teach Kindergarten through 2nd grade PE. It was only three days a week but it was the worst job I ever had. I learned that I am not cut out for working with kids that age. I wanted to shoot myself in the foot about half way through the year. I had had ENOUGH. I am still tainted to this day. I can only be around kids that age for about five minutes before I get a nervous tic. One of the upsides to the job was I got to run around and play every day, the other upside was Greg. Greg was a kindergartner in the "special class." Greg's classmates were, for lack of a better word, insane. Greg was a diagnosed mute. He would not talk to adults. His teacher warned me of this, and told me if I needed an answer from him for some reason to go through Nick, his buddy who would talk for him. The first day of class, Greg growled at me. Not a mean growl, just kind of a friendly RAWR.

I treated him like the rest of the kids. When he was a little punk, he got time out, when he was good, I let him know it. I started calling him Greg Bub and I called Nick, Nick Bub. I'm not real sure where that came from, but when I would call him that he would grin and give me a rawr. One day after Christmas break, I was handing out frisbees to groups of two. Greg and Nick came up and I asked them what color frisbee they wanted. Greg looked right at me and said, "Blue! Blue!" I handed him a blue frisbee, and they went on their merry way. I never made a big deal of Greg talking to me, but from that day on we would have conversations. He started calling me Cam Bub.

I got to meet his mom towards the end of the year at Field Day. She went on to tell me that I was one of the 7 adults in Greg's life that he talked to. All we could figure is that I was probably in the most "non-threatening" environment at school and all we did was play. I look pretty young for my age so that could have been part of it. Greg's teacher ended up asking me if I would give him his end of the year oral test. He was a very smart kid. He just didn't want to talk. He must have had some amazing willpower to not talk to his teacher all year long, not one word.

ACL is a Four Letter Word

Wrestling is a weird sport. Just because you are strong doesn't mean you are good at it. One of the kids at my school is just so strong for his size, but this is his first year wrestling. He gets pinned probably 1 out of 3 times. He finally got a pin today, it was pretty cool. Anyway, I digress... ACL, if you are an athlete of any level, you do not want to hear that abbreviation. It means surgery, holes drilled in the bones of your knee, painful recovery, painful rehab, and the end of your present season. And if you happen to play more than one sport, possibly the end of your next sport's season as well. I tore my ACL my senior year of high school and to a point I am glad it happened because it really helps with my job. When I have to tell a kid he probably tore his ACL, I can sympathize with him as well as prepare him for what is coming up with surgery and rehab, etc. I had to tell a kid he tore his ACL this weekend. When he described hearing and feeling the "POP" that comes with a torn ACL my knee instantly hurts and I feel slightly queasy. I explained what he needed to do for the rest of the weekend and that he needed to get in touch with an orthopaedic surgeon come Monday. I know he was trying very hard not to cry in front of me. I felt for him, I really did. The rest of the weekend was mostly uneventful. A gash over an eyebrow, a possible broken wrist, a bum hip, bumps and bruises and bloody noses...all a part of the wrestling experience. I am glad that my job of covering wrestling tournaments is pretty much over for the year. To end on a good note, my boys did get 2nd place in the tourney. Oh, and Duke won! It ended up a good day.

Ah... High School Kids...

So I am an athletic trainer at a local high school. It is a small school, about 200 kids. I am there every afternoon for practices and games. Right now it is basketball and wrestling season. If you haven't picked up on it, I am a huge basketball fan. I used to coach where I lived before. The chick that is coaching the C Squad (freshmen) team has never coached before, so i offered to come over and help a little. It is fun because there is only nine of them, so I get to play when we scrimmage. Anyway, we were working on an in-bounds play and one of the freshman shot me a sarcastic comment so I called her a crack smoker, completely kidding. She got all bent out of whack, it was really quite funny. So then today the coach couldn't be there so I offered to run them through their pre game practice. Crack smoker girl had all sorts of attitude towards me today. And the fact that we had demoted from her beloved point guard position a few days before was not helping her attitude. I so wanted to just tell her to shut her pie hole, but I'm not supposed to say such things, so I held my tongue. High school kids, gotta love em.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://itspsychosomatic.blogspot.com/2007/12/ah-high-school-kids.html' title='Ah... He turned 2. Grandma (my mom) sent him some presents. He got some rawhide bones and a hoodie. Yeah, I know, dog clothes are a bit over the top, but it gets cold where I live, and I'll make him wear it when it is below zero so he can stay warm while I traipse around like the Nanook of the North in my snow pants and parka.

I got to go snowboarding today. It was ok conditions, only about half of the resort was open. As I was riding up the chairlift and I noticed all the garbage that people just drop on the clean, white snow. I mean seriously, there are trash cans at the bottom of the chair lift and at the top so its not like you would even have to haul your garbage down the hill with you, just get to the top and throw it away. Goodness! Besides the trash, it was a good day. I bit it a couple times pretty hard, but survived. I am a little sore from the first day out, but it will get better from here on out. I will sleep good tonight, I can guarantee that! Alrighty then, I hope everyone out there had a fabulicious weekend!

It Would Suck to be a Cow

I have to drive about 30 miles to get to work everyday. I was making the drive this afternoon and some trucker cut me off. I hate it when truckers feel the need to pass each other and then it takes 'em five minutes to get past the other truck. Argh! Anyway, while I was waiting for the truck to get out of my way, I was noticing the cows. It would suck to be a cow. Especially here in the mountain west where it is now in the teens temperature wise. One of the first things I noticed was that the cows are a lot shaggier here. It looks funny when cows are shaggy, or maybe it just looks normal, and I'm the funny one. But wandering around in a snowy field all day trying to find something to eat in the freezing cold would be a horrible existence. I'm really glad I'm not a cow. I get to zip around in my jeep that has a heater. Yay for heat!

College Ball on a Wednesday Night

So I am sitting here watching the Ohio State/UNC game and right now, the Buckeyes are winning. I don't know if they will hang on or not, but the fact that UNC is down right now makes me a little giddy. If you pay any attention to College Basketball you know that you can't like Duke without hating UNC and vice versa. Duke/UNC is a huge rivalry, the biggest in college ball. It is sacreligious to even try to like both of them, so don't do it. As you have noticed, if you read the "About Me" section, I am a fanatical Duke fan so anytime UNC is losing, it is a very good day. And the fact that Duke won last night, makes it even better.
